Testing Week

Testing week is upon us here at Pt England School. After a long, hard year, where we have learnt so much and tried our hardest to improve, it is our chance to show what progress we have made.

These photo's are of us doing our writing sample. Can you see anything that is strange about they way we do our writing in Room 15?

You guessed it. We don't use pencils or paper to write on these days, we have our very own netbooks to type our writing. In term one we used pencils and paper because our typing skills weren't the best but after using our netbooks for 3 terms we are now all really quick typers, so this is how we do it.

Working Hard in the Sun

PhotobucketPhotobucketOn Friday it was a freezing cold morning. After sitting on the floor in the hall for an hour and a half, we decided that there was no better way to defrost, than to sit out on the deck and do our work. Much nicer than our boring old desks aye?Photobucket

MOTAT Field Trip

Yesterday Room 15, 16 and Room 17 went to Motat. We went to Motat because we wanted to learn more about our Technology topic Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger.

We saw a Mirror Maze, which was confusing. The Tactile Dome was cool because we had to figure out how to get out. There were old telephones at Motat and we went to the Challenge Zone too. When we were in the Challenge Zone we were buzzing with excitement because it was such a huge room. My group saw a Steam Engine which was really old. The best thing we saw was massive fire trucks which were different to the normal ones. They were longer and taller.

I enjoyed going to Motat on the bus and I had so much fun.

Reaction Contraptions

On Friday we had the challenge to create a reaction contraption. This meant that we used a whole lot of junk, toys and games to make some wacky reaction tracks.

From racing car tracks to toilet roles, cricket wickets to dominoes, and marbles to tin cans. We had a lot of fun making these, continuously modifying and adapting until we had the perfect, or not so perfect, contraption.

Check out these movies we made to see what we mean.

Making Towers

On Monday we all tried to make a tower. Our towers were made out of paper and sellotape. My team and I tried to make our tower stand still. We made it as tall as the roof.

Term 2

Welcome back to school for our longest term of the year. Although it is long, it does mean we can squeeze in loads of exciting activities and learning.

We will be studying technology through our topic of 'Bigger, Better, Faster, Stronger'. So look out for some creative and inspiring inventions and solutions to everyday problems.

Our winter sports start this term so a lot of us will be practicing and playing hard for our school and our clubs in Rugby, Netball and Rugby League. Cold, wet and windy days running around in the mud and puddles. Sounds like fun doesn't it!

With the dark cold days arriving, what better time to start swimming lessons! We will be heading down to the local pools over the next two weeks to learn how to be confident swimmers.

Throw in a field trip, Netball coaching and of course maths, writing and reading, and we do have a lot happening.

So watch this space to keep up to date with our comings and goings.

Running to Bases - by Asena

When we were on our way to play baseball we were so excited that we wanted to play straight away with-out practising. Our coach was a professional baseball player and his name was Cola. There are 4 types gear that we played baseball with and they are called bats, bases, baseballs and gloves.

I felt very nervous when we had our first practice. Getting to practice every Thursday I feel very happy. Feeling very happy makes me proud of myself.

When I hit the ball I run as fast as I can to the bases. Finally getting to the third base I had butterflies in in my stomach. Running is so hard but when I ran I made a home run!

Howard's Summer Holiday Highlight

In the holidays my favourite thing was jumping off the cliff at Bethell’s beach landing in the water. When I went to Mangere to go to my aunties house I saw my uncle Eddy in his car.
So I went to West Auckland to go to my uncle Eddy’s house.
After that I felt like I was going to fall asleep. Then I slept at his house and watched movies.

Week Two & Three

Well we are now three weeks into our first term of 2011 and we have been very very very busy.

Week two started with a monumentous event. WE FINALLY GOT OUR NETBOOKS! It was so exciting and we had so much to learn about how to use them. Although we really only wanted to play the cool games, we had to learn how to use them for their real purpose, which is as a learning tool. We liked school before but we love it now. Mr Marks is always surprised how early we get to school, to get online as soon as possible.
There will be more to come about our Netbooks.
So what else have we been doing in Room 15?

Every Thursday we learn how to play baseball with our awesome coach Cola. How lucky are we to be playing in such a beautiful setting.

We have started art with Mrs M.

But wait there's more...

Week One in Room 15

Well, we are into our second week of school here at Pt England School and man have we been busy.

On day one we got to meet our new family in room 15 for 2011, which includes 14 girls and 15 boys aged either 8 or 9 years old. When we got to class we had to do a lot of listening which was tiring after 6 weeks of holidays. We played some games and got to know each other as well as getting straight into some writing and maths. Our brains were exploding by the end of the day, Mr Marks included.

Over the rest of the week we worked really hard on our Maths, Reading and Writing so that by Friday we had earned an afternoon of playing capture the flag in the sun. We all learnt how to get online and open our google docs, send emails and create some awesome hyper studio images.

The best thing so far though, happened on the second Monday and you will have to wait to hear all about it...

In the meantime, why don't you check out our individual blogs in the sidebar which we will be updating shortly.

Introductions

Kia ora everyone, my name is Mr Marks and I am very proud to be a new member of the Pt England whanau. I will be teaching in room 15 during 2011 and cant wait to meet everyone on the 7th of Feb.

So, a little bit about me then. I love all sports and spend as much of my spare time as possible surfing with my wife (who is nearly better than me) and relaxing at the beach. I go to the Warriors whenever I can, I support Waikato and the Chiefs and I watch NBA online everyday as I love basketball. So you will definitely see me out on the fields whenever I get a spare moment.

I have had a great summer holiday so far with the highlight being a day at the beach with my wife. We woke up early, chucked the surfboards on the roof of the car, turned the stereo up and cruised to Hot Water Beach for a surf and a day in the sun. When we got there the sun was out the surf was really big and we were straight into the water. While catching our breaths sitting on our surfboards out the back of the waves, my wife suddenly screamed and nearly fell off her board as a big long grey shape jumped out of the water right beside her. It was a dolphin and there were two of them. So while we sat on our boards in the surf on a beautiful sunny day our two new friends dove, circled, jumped and splashed around us. It was a truly magical experience, especially considering we both caught our best waves ever on our surfboards.

So that’s just a little bit about me for now. Enjoy the rest of your holidays, make the most of each day and I look forward to posting again soon and introducing the rest of the 2011 Room 15 family.
